THREADS OF TALES

Every night, Chader Buri, the legendary granny on the moon, sits on the low stool at her spinning wheel and begins to spin a new tale…

HerStory Foundation, in collaboration with Bok Bok Books (UK) is engaged in an ongoing nakshi kantha research and book making project. Our unlimited-creativity, limited-edition embroidered story prompt is will be released in the winter of 2025.

This project has been made possible through the British Council International Collaboration Grants.

Threads of Tales Team

An embroidered story prompt

From the lunar loom of Chader Buri, our ancient grandmother, flow the goodnight stories that bloom into dreams. The symbols of this story prompt are inspired from Bengali folk tales and are here to remind you of stories you once heard, so you can spin new ones together with your listeners. The ever-renewing wonder we seek in our screens is but an echo of the creative force we innately hold. There are two sides to the story – the moonless night and the full moon night. You can start the story from any place, and go anywhere with it.

Even amidst rapid global shifts and climate change, let us aspire to greater connection, sharing our timeless human values and traditions across both generations and cultures, under the watchful eye of our companion moon. May the wisdom gained from this exchange cultivate peace and strengthen our shared humanity.

A sneak peak into the Chader Buri story prompt prototype

The Chader Buri nakshi kantha story prompt is designed by artists Ibraheem Paling (moonless night) and Kazi Istela Imam (full moon night) and produced by crafts women in Shatkira under the guidance of textile designer Sraboni Mohalder. The symbols of the story prompt are inspired by traditional folk tales collected by the team and interpreted by curator Katerina Don.
